The website for London Detainee Support Group's Detained Lives campaign to end indefinite detention, www.detainedlives.org, has been launched. The website will be a source of information and news about indefinite immigration detention lasting for more than a year. It features pages for several current detainees to share their views and stories. We will be adding pages for more detainees over the coming weeks.
The Detained Lives research report into the real cost of indefinite detention will be published this Thursday 29 January. The report will show that this practice causes unnecessary damage to detainees' lives, as well as wasting taxpayers' money. LDSG analysed 188 case files of detainees held for more than a year, and found that only 18% have been deported, undermining the Home Office's claim that indefinite detention is necessary to facilitate deportations. 24 indefinite detainees interviewed for the research described the terrible impact on their lives and mental health.
The report will be launched this Thursday 29 January from 6:30pm at Amnesty International UK, 17-25 New Inn Yard, London EC2A 3EA, see map at: http://www.amnesty.org.uk/content.asp?CategoryID=10151
It will also be available on the website www.detainedlives.org.
